LIGHTS, CAMERAS, ACTION:
PHOENIX FILM CRITICS UNITE

Valley film critics unite to form the Phoenix Film Critics Society.   The Society was founded by Roger Tennis, of the CLIPS TV series, and David ‘at the snack bar’ Ramsey, of KMLE-FM, in October 2000. The PFCS quickly gained attention from the major film studios and independent film distributors.  One of the reasons for the recognition was that all members are established film critics in the Phoenix area.  Ramsey serves as the Society’s President, and Tennis is the Vice President.

“We felt that establishing the Society would generate recognition and respect for the Phoenix area critics that other cities' critics currently enjoy," said Ramsey.  “Many of the award-worthy films open in Phoenix after the fact, missing many of our top ten lists.  With the Society, we hope to ensure timely screenings of those films.”

“We wanted to put Phoenix on the short list of cities that are important to the studios and independents," added Tennis.  “One of our goals as a Society is to promote film in Arizona by helping to involve the community in support of the motion picture as an art form.”

Annual Awards: The Society will present an entire slate of awards each year. To qualify, films must be screened in the Phoenix area prior to the end of the year. Screenings can be in a theatre or on available video formats. Only critic members of the Society may vote.

Critic Membership Requirements:
 · Individual is recognized as an official critic for the station/publication by an on-staff decision-maker.
 · Critic reviews regularly.
 · Critic can show proof of regular reviews.
 · Critic has reviewed for the station/publication for a minimum of six months.
. Critic is recognized by the major film studios.
. Critic writes/delivers film criticism or reviews, not solely interviews or features.
.  Individual reviews within the State of Arizona.
 · Individual does not primarily review for a student publication or station.
 · Individual does not review solely for an on-line service.

Mission Statement:
· To gain respect and recognition for Arizona area critics.
· To ensure Phoenix screenings of award-worthy and award-hyped films on a timely basis.
· To put Phoenix on the short list of cities that are important to the studios and independents.
· To promote film in Arizona by helping to involve the community in support of the motion picture as an art form.
· To showcase Arizona filmmakers and to help expand the world of independent film in Arizona.
· To support efforts for film preservation.
