Q.
There
was
a
movie
I
saw
on
HBO
either
in
the
late
70's
or
early
80's
that
was
about
a
group
of
kids
in
England
that
decided
to
run
away
from
home
and
found
a
deserted
house
to
live
in.
I
believe
the
movie
was
called
Never
Never
Land
but
I'm
not
positive.
Can
you
please
confirm
the
name
of
the
movie
and
if
it's
available
on
VHS
or
DVD? A. "Never Never Land" is a 1980 British film with runaway kids, but it focuses on a little girl who's obsessed with Peter Pan. I don't think it is available in the U.S. at this time. You may try for a British copy on eBay. Reply from Cory: Got another one for you. This one was a play that played on HBO in the early 80's. Around the same time Barefoot in the Park with Richard Thomas aired. The play was about 3 friends, one of them I know for sure was Annette O'Toole. The name or the play had the song "You Keep Me Hangin' On" involved. Would like to know if you know the title and if it's available. Thanks A. Sounds like the 1981 cable movie "Vanities". It doesn't appear to be available. Reply from Cory: Kudos! You are good!! It is coming back to me and that is the name. Thanks Q. Hi, I was searching for Barefoot in the Park starring Richard Thomas, when I found your site, and found it is not available, too bad, as it was going to be a surprise gift for a dear freind, however, I had a ball reading your site and all the Q & A's! Anyway it got me to thinking about a movie that I enjoyed when I was (ahem) much younger. And I was wondering if you had a way to find it or at least let me know the name of it. From what I recall it was a "Wonderful World of Disney" episode type movie, and if I remember somewhere in 1976 or 1977. The story was about children living in an old haunted type house and a ghost of a little girl and a well and a doll, I apologize for being so vague, but I really can't remember much else about it, except that as a kid I was entranced by the movie as it had a very haunting feel throughout. If I remember correctly the children had moved into the house, saw the ghost and found the doll in the well, but am not totally sure of that. Any help you can give would be appreciated, as well as any chance of Barefoot in the Park becoming Available soon, as her b-day is Aug 26! I know the film with Redford and Fonda is available but she really enjoyed the one with Thomas and Armstrong. Thanks in advance for your time. KDW, Ocala Florida A.
The
movie
you
are
looking
for
sounds
like
"Child
Of
Glass"
-
a
1978
Disney
tv
movie.
It
might
still
be
available
on
VHS,
but
not
yet
on
DVD.
Let
me Reply from KDW: YES! OmyGosh! you guys are amazing! I knew right when I heard the title that it was the same movie. Thank you again for your time and I will visit your site often. ( I suprised myself by being pretty close in the year, I am 42 now! ) Now I know the name to search and buy the movie, thanx again for Barefoot in the Park lookout too! Q.
I
am
desparately
searching
for
a
movie
that
my
mother
remembers
seeing.
Unfortunately,
she
remembers
very
little
about
it
-
only
that
she
thinks
it
was
an
older
British
comedy
and
that
there
is
a
scene
involving
a
bandstand
and
a
little
old
lady
in
a
runaway
wheelchair.
Any
suggestions
would
be
much
appreciated!
Thanks. A. That sounds like "The Notorious Landlady" with Jack Lemmon and Kim Novak. It was filmed in 1962 in black & white and takes place in London and is available from Movies Unlimited (use the above link). Reply from Chris: Thank you very much! Q. I need help to find the Title of a movie that I saw around 1966 or
67..It was on the old afternoon movie out of Nashville TN.. I think it was based
on the Movie "The Seven Samurai".. It was a medieval movie where a
Prince make a journey to capture or rescue someone. He was accompanied by the
seven greatest knights of the time, and if I remember
correctly even a Japanese Samurai.. One by one, they were killed before he
completed the journey, but came back to life at the end.... Any help would
helpful... Q.
I
just
found
your
site
and
I
think
it's
great.
Anway,
I
hope
you
can
help.
I'm
looking
for
a
british
movie
about
a
woman
who
is
fed
up
with
her
husband
and
kids.
They
take
her
for

and
ignore
her.
She
finally
has

decided
to
take

by
herself.
While
there,
she
has
a

decides
that
she
isn't

At
the

her
husband
ends
up
coming
to
Greece
to
meet
with
her.
I'm
sorry
I'm
so
vague,
but
I
saw
it
such
a
long
time
ago.
I
don't
remember
much
of
the
details.
I
know
I
saw
it
on
cable,
either
Showtime
or
HBO. A. Thanks for the comments on our site. The movie you're looking for is "Shirley Valentine" (1989) starring Pauline Collins. It should still be available on video from Movies Unlimited (use the above link). Reply from Rosa: Wow! That was fast. Thank you very much for the information. My search for this video has now begun. :) OLDER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q. I am looking for a short-lived TV Western titled "Hondo" with Ralph Teager as Hondo Lane. It was shown in the fall/winter of 1967 on ABC. That was before my time but remember watching it with my father when it aired on cable (TNT in 1992, I think.) I would be eternally grateful for any info you could provide. Thanks, Curtis A. The pilot episode "Hondo & The Apaches" is available on VHS from Movies Unlimited (use link above). Q.
I
have
a
mystery
movie
that
came
across
on
cable
a
while
back
and
missed
the
title.
I'm
hoping
someone
can
help
me
with
it.
It's
black
and
white
(I'd
say
late
50s/early
60's.
In
it,
a
guy
who
lives
with
his
obese
mother
is
dating
a
girl,
who
he
brings
home
to
meet
the
mom.
The
mother
is
obsessed
with
TV
commercials
and
gets
excited
when
one
comes
on
about
some
"King
Crab"
product.
Later
the
guy
is
sitting
outside
on
a
porch
with
the
girl
and
tells
her
of
bizarre
dream
that
he
has
about
the
mother
being
eaten
by
crabs
(seriously).
I
know
it
sounds
crazy,
but
I
saw
it.
Any
help
with
details? A. Sounds like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" to me. Johnny Depp was the star. But it was filmed in color in 1993. Q.
I
am
looking
for
a
video
I
saw
advertised
some
time
ago.
It
is
all
film
clips
of
old
tv
comedys.
Red
Skelton,
Jack
Benny
Lucille
Ball
etc.
Really
funny
stuff,
I
would
like
to
get
it
for
my
Mom
who
has
dimentia,
and
would
remember
the
old
stuff. A.
That
could
be
"The
Golden
Age
Of
TV
Comedy".
I
know
this
is
available
in
multi-set
DVD
(and
probably
VHS)
format.
Q. I was wondering if
you could help me out with a movie title, this movie came out in the 90's and
it's a Sci-Fi flick. I don't know the names of the actors, but the story
is about a government who is implementing a new society with controlling DNA,
no one is supposed to be giving birth the natural way any longer, but when the
main character is discovered that his birth was natural, the government
seeks him out. There is more to the story but that is the gist of it,
IT'S KILLING ME TO KNOW THE TITLE!! Help me please! Thanks! Reply from cgeneral: That's the one! Thanks a lot! Great website!! Q. I am looking for an old Bill Cosby & Syndey Poitier movie
that was made back in the seventies. It also starred Sheryl Lee Ralph
(who had to be in her early twenties at the time). I dont know the
name of it, or even what it was about, but I do know that it is not Uptown
Saturday Night. I need to know if it is available on videotape &
if so, WHERE!!!
Q. Could you please tell me who played Rebecca Mclintock in the
movie MCLINTOCK, starring John Wayne? Thank you very much.
A. Stefanie Powers played Wayne's daughter in MCLINTOCK!, a western version of "The Taming Of The Shrew." Q. I have tried everyone for this title ..no one has been
able to come up with it..maybe you can get it..its a mid 70 s summertime
type of movie,with
teenagers..
I believe Barry Gordon was in
it.
It
had a St.Bernard named Rollie
Pollie..
One couple was getting married and
their limo broke
down..
They rode to the church in the back of a friends
deli truck with the
meat..
The name of this movie has eluded me for
sometime..
please help me find it
A. This sounds like the Disney comedy SUPERDAD. Bob Crane starred, with Kurt Russell and Kathleen Cody as the young couple. It had a St. Bernard, deli truck and wedding but no Barry Gordon. How about Ed Begley Jr. or Bruno Kirby instead?. Q. One day while channel surfing I came upon a vintage Greer
Garson film. It had been colorized, which is another story, however,
this is my question. The plot was about an architect's wife ( Garson)
who was having
an affair with a young associate in the firm. I had never seen
the picture before. Unfortunately, I caught but just a few minutes
of it and haven't the foggiest notion as to what the name of this film
is. Consulting with movie buffs of all ages has not proven to be
successful....can anyone be of help??
A. I think you surfed upon "That Forsyte Woman" (1949) with Errol Flynn, Greer Garson, and Walter Pidgeon. The plot follows a married Victorian woman who falls for an architect engaged to be wed. Q. Hi! Great Site! I just found it on Yahoo. Can you tell
me what breed of dog appeared in the Oscar-winning film "As Good As It
Gets." It was a small dog.
A. That lovable Verdell is a Brussels Griffon, a rare European breed. Q. Do you know where I may purchase a copy of the 1948 version
of Joan of Arc starring Ingrid Bergman?
A. The 1948 classic was available at REEL.com for
$11.99/DVD or $16.99/VHS. It's a hot film. I'd stake my reputation
on it.
Q. I recently saw "Sunset" with James Garner as Wyatt Earp.
Didn't Garner play Earp in another western? If so, is it on video?
A. James Garner portrayed Wyatt Earp in HOUR OF THE GUN (1967). The video can be purchased from MGM/UA Home video for around $15. Q. There is a movie where they say "Nice night for a walk,
eh?" I'm thinking the Untouchables, but I am not certain.
A. We found the following quote from THE TERMINATOR (1984):
. Q. A co-worker had me look for any information on actor Victor Mature. I did find some info, but we would like to know if Mr. Mature is still alive and healthy or has he passed on. The lady seems to be quite a fan of his. She does not own a computer so this is why I am sending this E-Mail. Can you help me? Pat@attcanada.net A. Victor is still alive. He was born on January 29, 1915. Q. Are episodes of the Disney TV series "Zorro" on video?
Did Disney make a theatrical version?
A. Some episodes can be purchased through Disney's budget
video line for around $10 each. They are approximately 90 minutes
long. Also, Disney did string episodes together into a theatrical
feature called THE SIGN OF ZORRO. It is also available for around
$10 from the same source.
Q. If anyone there can answer this movie question I would
MOST appreciate it. I have yet to find anyone on a Net 'Movie' site
who can. I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for
the LONGEST time. The leading actress is Mimi Rogers. She plays a
rather neurotic lady with a pretty sad background, who hires a hit man
to kill her (yes, she hires one to kill herself) because she's been trying
to commit suicide for years but just can't seem to get up the nerve.
Don't know the leading man/ hit man's name either! Really unusual
plot, I thought. Anyway .... I just HAVE to see this flick again but cannot
remember the name of it. PLEASE help! (Oh, and if you happen
to know what studio produced it that would probably help me locate it).
Thank You SO Much. This Is Driving Me Crazy!
A. Don't go crazy! Try BULLETPROOF HEART starring Mimi, with Anthony LaPaglia as the hit man. This little 1995 gem is available from Republic Pictures Home Video (213-965-6900). Q. I wonder if you could help me. I was trying to
trace a movie for a friend. In this movie, John Wayne played a man
called Sean Thornton. That's all I have to go on. Any ideas?
A. That would be the 1952 classic THE QUIET MAN, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. It is readily available on video from Republic Pictures Home Video. Q. With the recent excitement about the new Zorro movie,
a friend mentioned that before there was Zorro, there was Elfego Baca.
Can you identify this character? Was it a Disney character or production?
Who was Elfego? Thanks. This is driving us all nuts; all anyone remembers
is the name!
A. Elfego Baca was a sheriff and lawyer in the frontier west. Robert Loggia starred in the multi-part series on Walt Disney's TV show in the late 1950s. It was called THE NINE LIVES OF ELFEGO BACA and occasionally turns up on the Disney Channel. Q. Could you please tell me the name of the movie that
a man named Brian Avery starred in alongside Dustin Hoffman?
A. Brian Avery acted with Dustin Hoffman in THE GRADUATE (1967). His character's name was Carl Smith. Q. Rented a movie about the married life of T. S.
Eliot. It was no more than a few years old, but cannot remember the
name of the film. Can someone give me the name of the film?
A. The name of the film about T. S. Eliot's married life is called TOM & VIV (1994). It stars Willem Dafoe and Miranda Richardson and is available through Buena Vista Home Video. Q. The late great Notorious B.I.G., a.k.a. "Biggy Smalls", is named after a gangster character in a 1970's Bill Cosby movie where Cosby plays a cop, or private investigator, or something. Anyway, somebody told me (and I don't know how accurate this somebody is) that the name "Biggy Smalls" is the name of the antagonist in this Cosby flick from the 70's and that's where The Notorious B.I.G. got his name. Do you happen to know what movie this "Biggy Smalls" character came from? Scott@asu.edu A. This character came from the 1975 Cosby film, LET'S DO IT AGAIN. Calvin Lockhart played Biggie Smalls in the comedy directed by Sidney Poitier. Q. Recently we purchased a video of the movie ISLAND IN THE SUN. The movie starred Harry Belafonte, James Mason, Joan Collins and Joan Fontaine. The setting for the movie was a Caribbean island depicting racial controversy on the island. I was very impressed with the island setting and would like to find out what island in the Caribbean the movie shot at. Any information you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help. John@your-net.com A. This classic movie was filmed in Barbados. Q. Our video question for the week at work was, "What was the chauffeur's name in DRIVING MISS DAISY?" I know Morgan Freeman played the part, but I can't remember his name.... Any help would be appreciated. Margie@earthlink.com A. Morgan Freeman's character was named Hoke Colburn. Q. Whatever happened to Robert Powell, the British actor. He was always my favorite British actor. I can only find a few of his movies in our video rental stores. I'd love a biography on him. Any chance of this? Kristy@buffnet.net A. Robert Powell - Date of birth - 1 June 1944, Salford, England,
UK
Q. I once saw the first black and white version of King of Kings and it reminded me of the classic black and white Joan of Arc. Were these films made by the same director? Also, is it possible to get either of these really great old b & w classics? Thanks! Avary@sprintmail.com A. KING OF KINGS (1927) was directed by Cecil B. DeMille and is available on video. JOAN OF ARC (1948) was directed by Victor Fleming, was shot in color, and is available on video. THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (1928) was silent, B & W, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer in French. It is not available on video. Q. Jack Nicholson was in a movie called THE FORTUNE. It came out right around the time EASY RIDER was released. I've heard great things about this movie, mainly because the Coen Bros. listed it as one of their favorites. I've talked to a few video stores who claim it is very hard to find. Do you know anywhere I could rent it or do you feel it's good enough to include in my vast home movie library? Scott@asu.edu A. You can easily buy the Jack Nicholson/Warren Beatty comedy for under $17. It has just been reissued on tape. This reissue coincides with the video release of AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Q. In 1980, give or take a few years, Matt Dillon starred in
a movie called OVER THE EDGE about a bunch of misguided kids living in
a small town in Colorado. These punks end up turning against their parents,
teachers and police and eventually blow up the school at the end of the
movie. The directing is tre-70s along w/ the music clips (Cheap Trick,
The Cars, Van Halen, etc), but all in all it's kind've a wild ride. I caught
it a few months ago on Cinemax, but I can't find it on video anywhere.
My question is, do you know of a video store in Phoenix where I can rent
this or purchase a copy?
A. This 1979 ode to REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE is available from Warner Home Video. It certainly is a wild ride and is also noted for Matt Dillon's big-screen debut. It can be ordered in the Valley through the Suncoast chain of stores. The sale price is under $15. Q.
Here's a tough one. This was a "silent" film about a mad scientist
who built a female-looking robot that caused some havoc. The scientist
planned to build robots to replace mankind. I've got no idea the particulars
on this one but clips from it are everywhere! Also, was Paul Newman in
a car-racing-type movie called WINNING?
A. I think the silent film is METROPOLIS (1926), and Paul Newman did star in WINNING (1969). Q. We were wondering if you could help free us of brain grid-lock?
We are a group of family medicine residents and we have a question. There
is a movie with Lindsay Wagner in which a group of friends go to South
America to solve a mystery. What was the title of the movie?
A. That sounds like HIGH RISK (1981) with Lindsay and James Brolin. It's about a group of friends who battle dope dealers and bandidos in South America. Available through Anchor Bay (800-786-8777). Q. Who played the part of Dorian in the original film, THE PICTURE
OF DORIAN GRAY?
A. Hurd Hatfield played Dorian Gray in the 1945 original. It is available on video from MGM/UA Home Entertainment (310-449-3000). Q. Is THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY available on video? If not, am
curious why.
Q. Any news on when the 1953 movie THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY starring
John Wayne will be released on video. I understand the Wayne Estate is
keeping this locked up for a long time. Any reason why?
A. This is one movie I'd like to get for my collection. My guess is the Wayne Estate feels there is not enough interest in a Duke movie that's not a western or a war flick. After all, they did unlock HONDO and MCLINTOCK! Q. Just curious about the 1966 version of the remake of the movie
STAGECOACH with Ann-Margret, Bing Crosby. Has it ever been released on
video? I've checked video exchange stores, even called 20th Century Fox
who produced the movie. Even they didn't know what I was talking about.
Any news would be helpful.
A. As of now, this version with Alex Cord in the John Wayne role is not available on video. Occasionally it turns up on cable and DSS on AMC and the new FXM. I'm surprised Fox doesn't know about it. Probably a star or someone's estate is keeping it out of video. Maybe Wayne Newton can't stand his rendition of the title song. Q. Can you tell me if WAIT UNTIL DARK, starring Audrey Hepburn
and Alan Arkin is available on video and where I could order it from? I
believe it was made in 1987.
A. The classic1967 thrilller is released on video through Warner Home Video (818-954-6000). Any local video store should be able to order it for you. Q. I would like to know where the movie THE WORLD ACCORDING TO
GARP was filmed. The film stars Robin Williams, John Lithgow and Glenn
Close.
A. According to our studio sources, GARP was filmed in Tuckahoe, New York. Q. Hello. I live In Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. I am wondering
if you know where I can rent a certain movie. It has Jerry Lewis and Louis
Anderson. I think it was called TROOP 7. But it was hilarious, and I would
love you dearly if you could find it.
A. I think the movie you're looking for is THE WRONG GUYS with Louie Anderson and Richard Lewis. It's about former boy scouts who have a reunion and run into escaped convicts. You can buy it for under $10 from www.reel.com. Q. What was the year that the first ALIEN movie was released?
A. ALIEN was released in 1979 from Twentieth Century Fox. Q. Could you please provide a list of Sam Fuller films and their
availability on videocassette.
A. Here's a list of Sam Fuller's movies available on video: I SHOT JESSE JAMES (1949) - Rex # Miller (314-649-5048)
Q. I am a collector and am trying to complete a Nastassia Kinski
film collection. The one remaining movie that I would like to locate and
purchase is EXPOSED (1983), MGM/UA Home Video. Can you please give me a
source for obtaining this movie; studio, collector, etc!
A. You should be able to order EXPOSED direct from MGM/UA Home Entertainment (310-449-3000). Q. I am looking for a crazy sort of mtv-video-clip-like romance
starring Kevin Bacon. It is either from 1990 or 1994. The main characters
were called Ari and Sam, but I can find no video with that name.
A. That movie would be PYRATES (1991) starring Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. You can order a new VHS copy for $12.72 through www.reel.com. Q. I'm looking for a VHS copy of KOYAANISQATSI (documentary ~
sort of, 1983, subtitled LIFE OUT OF BALANCE, music by Philip Glass). None
of the usual rental/retail outlets have been able to track it down, but
I really want it (it's for a gift). Do you have any ideas as to where I
can purchase it? I would even settle for a used copy if no new ones are
available. Thanks!
A. This classic is currently available from three distributors:
Music Video Distributors (800-888-0486), Facets Multimedia (800-331-6197),
and Mike Lebell's Video (213-938-3333).
