TRIVIA: What popular 1996 TV series featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tommy Solomon?
Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a writer of radio programs who has a good life with beautiful girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) and best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen). His world is turned upside-down when he's diagnosed with cancer. Family, friends and attractive young therapist Katherine (Anna Kendrick) help Adam cope with his dilemma. "50/50" takes a lighthearted, but uneven, look at this serious subject. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is brilliant and believable in the role of Adam, delivering one of the best performances of the year. The biggest problem is Seth Rogen, who can't rise above the typical raunchy character he's used to playing. The rest of the supporting cast members, including Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard, fit in nicely. Anjelica Huston makes a brief, but memorable, appearance as Adam's mother. Getting a few laughs out of illness is difficult, so director Jonathan Levine and writer Will Reiser deserve credit for this effort. If only they had toned down the R rated material, this enlightening film would open up to a wider audience. Even with its flaws and age limits, "50/50" isn't half bad. |
