An evil mastermind (the voice of Steve Carell) uses three orphan girls to accomplish his latest criminal scheme in this animated comedy.
TRIVIA: Steve Carell provided the voice of Hammy in what 2006 full-length animated comedy?
(3 CAMS) RATED PG
Criminal mastermind Gru (the voice of Steve Carell), trying to become top villain, needs the help of three orphan girls to overcome his arch-enemy Vector (Jason Segel). Gru, with his army of yellow minions, has a grand new scheme: to steal the moon. But the evil genius didn't plan on developing a fatherly interest in his three young charges. "Despicable Me" is a delightful animated comedy that has something for everyone. While not quite in the same league as "Toy Story 3", this visual romp is entertaining for the kids and grownups. Directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, the best use of 3D in recent years is on display here: a rollicking roller-coaster ride and an in-your-face closing credit sequence. Much of the slapstick humor is provided by the Twinkie-like minions, with most of their unintelligible voices belonging to the film's directors. Besides Carell and Segel, you may recognize the sound of Julie Andrews as Gru's mom and Russell Brand as his assistant Dr. Nefario. Outrageous sight gags and some clever adult jokes fill the screen - including a hilarious stab at a financial institution. Despite its evil theme, "Despicable Me" is likable and heartwarming family entertainment.
