TRIVIA: The original "Fame" movie was released in what year? ROG'S VIEWPOINT ![]() ![]()
(3 CAMS) RATED PGFrom freshman through senior year, a group of students struggle to succeed at a New York City school for the performing arts. "Fame" is a tuneful, sometimes vibrant, remake of the original classic. Director Kevin Tancharoen, who was the force behind "Britney Spears Live From Miami", should have focused entirely on the music. The drama, ranging from romantic encounters to parental disapproval and dashed career hopes, tends to bring this movie to a grinding halt. Uneven performances don't help. Heading the cast of young hopefuls are Kay Panabaker, Naturi Naughton, Walter Perez and Asher Book. Debbie Allen and Charles S. Dutton are among the veterans who fill the staff positions at the school. Cheers to Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth as two of the more believable teachers. Best of all is Megan Mullally (TV's "Will & Grace"), who impressively belts out a show-stopping tune. Character development may have made this more than just another high school musical. At least, some incredible song and dance routines should elicit repeat viewings - most likely on home video. Thanks to these memorable moments, "Fame" is gonna live forever.
