TRIVIA: Adam Sandler delivered an outstanding dramatic performance in what 2007 movie? ROG'S VIEWPOINT ![]() ![]() ![]() (4 CAMS)
RATED R
After learning that his rare blood disorder is terminal, comedian George Simmons (Adam Sandler) hires inexperienced comic Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) to be his semi-personal assistant and opening act. The two become friends and help each other through life's problems. "Funny People" is an often hilarious and sometimes bittersweet comedy with dramatic overtones. Writer/director Judd Apatow ("Knocked Up") created this seemingly autobiographical movie with ex-roommate Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen in mind to play the two leads and both are excellent in the roles. Apatow's tendency towards pushing the limits on language and sexual situations earns this lengthy 146 min. film its R rating. But the great cast provides plenty to revel in for an adult audience. Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman are notable as Ira's more successful roommates Leo and Mark. The talented and beautiful Leslie Mann (Mrs. Apatow) plays George's ex-girlfriend Laura, who left the cheating Simmons and married another roving eye named Clarke (Eric Bana). Much to Ira's dismay, George tries to reconnect with Laura after his illness goes into remission. Keeping the entire Apatow family employed, daughters Maude and Iris portray Laura's young girls. They do an admirable job - having performed the same task in "Knocked Up". "Funny People" is filled with funny people. Look for cameos from folks like Andy Dick, Sarah Silverman, George Wallace, Norm MacDonald, Ray Romano and many more. One-liners and stand-up comedy blend well with the dramatics. Sure to become the must-see movie for comedians everywhere, "Funny People" seriously delivers the laughs. |
