TRIVIA: Annette Bening made her big screen debut in what 1988 movie? ROG'S VIEWPOINT ![]() ![]() ![]()
(4 CAMS) RATED RThe lives of three women are affected by adoption. Karen (Annette Bening) is a lonely and bitter nursing home worker. During her teen years, she gave her daughter up for adoption. Elizabeth (Naomi Watts), adopted at birth with no knowledge of her biological parents, is a work-driven lawyer who can't commit to a relationship. Lucy (Kerry Washington) and husband Joseph (David Ramsey), learning they can't have a child, are desperate to adopt. Fate intervenes. "Mother And Child" is an engrossing and unforgettable tearjerker. What makes this an award-worthy film are the stellar performances of Annette Bening and Naomi Watts. They have created two layered, emotionally-scarred women without sacrificing believability. Writer/director Rodrigo Garcia weaves many plot twists and multiple characters into this tale of redemption. But his fine supporting cast is overshadowed by the stars. Samuel L. Jackson is outstanding as Elizabeth's new boss Paul, who takes more than a passing interest in her. Jimmy Smits is equally good as Paco, Karen's understanding and patient love interest. Several films have attempted to bring seemingly unrelated stories together. Some, like "Crash", have succeeded. Others have failed. This effort solidly stands on its own. The many melodramatic and fascinating turns in this gem lead to an ending that is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. "Mother And Child" is a bonding experience.
