TRIVIA: Antonio Banderas was a voice actor in what 2007 animated feature directed by Chris Miller?
The charming outlaw cat Puss in Boots ( voiced by Antonio Banderas) teams with boyhood friend -turned-enemy Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) to find the magic beans that will lead to the Goose that lays the Golden Eggs. Standing in their way are the keepers of the beans: Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris). "Puss In Boots" is a fast-paced and mildly entertaining animated adventure. As a character spin-off from "Shrek", this kitty tale has more in common with "Rango" - a western hero must save the town while clearing his reputation. Director Chris Miller fills the screen with action and sight gags, but the adult humor falls short of the original "Shrek". For a change, the 3D doesn't get in the way of the visually stunning backgrounds. Some of the effects involving swords work very well. Speaking of swords, with Banderas as the swashbuckling cat, there is a Zorro joke or two. Grownups in the audience may take a liking to Galifianakis' Humpty, who laments that life in prison for him may not be over-easy. It's eggcellent humor that'll fly over the kids' heads. Don't worry folks, the young ones will find plenty of laughs on their own. While not the purrfect family entertainment, "Puss In Boots" does spin a delightful yarn. |
