ROG'S VIEWPOINT

Detectives Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) match wits with serial killer and black magic practitioner Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), who threatens the very foundation of England. "Sherlock Holmes" is an intelligent and fantastic thrill ride that's certainly one of the best movies of the year. Easily among the greatest Holmes films, director Guy Ritchie's inventive thriller is loaded with action, twists and turns. An impeccable cast adds to the enjoyment. Robert Downey Jr. is nothing short of brilliant as a tougher and aggressive Holmes while Jude Law adds a more human quality to the dapper, daring and patient Watson. The chemistry between the two actors is extraordinary. Along for the ride is Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, a formidable con artist and the only woman to outsmart the famous detective. Eddie Marsan makes Inspector Lestrade, who is always one step behind Sherlock, more than just a cardboard cutout. This genre needs a great villain for the movie to succeed. Mark Strong's portrayal of Lord Blackwood is pure evil and genius. Hans Zimmer's memorable score and atmospheric cinematography by Philippe Rousselot capture the look and feel of Victorian London. The plot is so finely detailed that repeat viewings would help - the performances alone are worth another look. This intricate mystery is not so much a who-done-it, but more of a how-done-it. The conclusion is truly satisfying. I deduce that "Sherlock Holmes" will lead to other big screen adventures of the great sleuth. The game is afoot.
