TRIVIA: Imelda Staunton had a role in what 1995 Ang Lee film? ROG'S VIEWPOINT ![]() ![]() ![]() (4 CAMS) RATED RIn the summer of 1969, down-on-his-luck interior designer Elliot Teichberg (Demetri Martin) moves back home to help his parents run their failing motel. When a hippie music festival loses its permit in a neighboring town, Elliot seizes the opportunity to bring the event closer to the family business and hopefully stop foreclosure. Inspired by a true story, "Taking Woodstock" is a pleasant and nostalgic experience that sent this baby boomer happily back to the Age of Aquarius. Director Ang Lee gently guides this character-driven look at the days leading up to and during the historic three-day concert that celebrated peace and love. Anyone expecting to see the legendary music performances will be disappointed and should go out and rent or buy the "Woodstock" DVD. Those who attend will be rewarded with a fascinating film that expertly blends comedy and drama. The performances are good throughout, with Imelda Staunton absolutely fantastic as Sonia Teichberg, Elliot’s fearsome mother. As Vilma, a transvestite ex-marine who provides security at the motel, Liev Schreiber is stunning. Although noted for serious themes, Ang Lee keeps it light here, only briefly touching on Elliot’s gay lifestyle and the insecurity of his mother. The movie contains both male and female nudity, but no heavy Brokeback moments. “Taking Woodstock” is a groovy trip.
