TRIVIA: Which 1990 John Waters film featured Johnny Depp in the title role? ROG'S VIEWPOINT ![]() ![]()
(3 CAMS) RATED PG-13
Aboard a train headed for Venice, American schoolteacher and tourist Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp) meets the mysterious beauty Elise Clifton-Ward (Angelina Jolie). Soon he is tangled in a web of intrigue - mistaken for her lover as he dodges the police and mobsters. "The Tourist" is a lighthearted romantic caper that succeeds as harmless matinee fare. At times, it tries too hard to capture the style of Hitchcock classics like "To Catch A Thief" and "North By Northwest". Based on the 2005 French film "Anthony Zimmer", the main asset of this new version is the appeal of charismatic stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ("The Lives Of Others") makes the most of his talented cast and the picturesque Venice - giving the movie a rather James Bond epic feel. Among the cast members is ex-Bond Timothy Dalton as Chief Inspector Jones. Paul Bettany is fun to watch as the intense Inspector Acheson, who's obsessed with this case. There's a surprise twist near the end that mystery fans will easily detect. Nevertheless, "The Tourist" is a mildly pleasant cinematic journey.
